INSTITUTE, W.Va. -Â The University of Charleston women's softball team ran its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of W.Va. State University Tuesday afternoon by the scores of 4-3 and 4-0.
Charleston (26-7, 15-3 MEC) struggled to provide offense all day but managed to string together productive at-bats in the sixth inning of both games. W.Va. State (20-18, 5-11 MEC) did a great job keeping UC off-balance most of the day, allowing only five hits in each game.
In game one,
Alli Burdette (Charleston, WV), took a 4-0 lead into the seventh, but State put together a rally to make the score 4-3.
Jessie Rowe (Lavalette, WV), entered the game with two outs. She picked up her sixth save after throwing just two pitches, as
Bethany Williams (Cooper City, FL) threw out a Yellow Jackets base runner trying to steal second to end the game. Burdette scattered seven hits and struck out 11 over six and two-thirds innings, picking up her Mountain East Conference league-leading 14th win.
At the plate,
Laura Ashlock's (Kansas City, MO)Â RBI single got UC on the board and
Kelly Browning (Fairfield, OH) followed with a two-RBI single in the sixth, extending her hitting streak to 17 games and extending the lead to 3-0. A Williams squeeze bunt scored Browning and gave the Golden Eagles the 4-0 lead.
Game two saw much of the same for Charleston as State outhit UC yet again. However, Rowe and good defense managed to limit the Yellow Jackets to zero runs despite nine hits.
Alyssa Stanley's (Blacklick, OH) double in the fourth inning gave Charleston a 1-0 lead. The sixth inning proved to be the difference yet again, as the Golden Eagles scored three more times when Stanley singled to score Williams, and
Rachelle Toppings (Logan, WV) singled to drive in two more for UC, making the score 4-0. Stanley and Williams had four of the five hits for Charleston in game two.
Charleston will be back in action Saturday, April 9, as it hosts Notre Dame College, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
