Johnson Named Dave Williams Atlantic Region Coach of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The GCAA in conjunction with Golf Pride Grips announced the outstanding collegiate golf coaches receiving the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award presented by Golf Pride Grips. Golf Pride Grips will present the coaches with their awards during the Hall of Fame Banquet at the GCAA National Convention on December 12.

Saint Leo's Chris Greenwood was named Coach of the Year for Division II. Greenwood led Saint Leo to its first national championship in 2016. The Lions captured three team titles this season, including the national title, and finished in the top five in 11 of 12 tournaments. The team set the NCAA Championship record for team score through 36 and 54 holes. Freshman Hugo Bernard set the championships 36 and 54 hole record en route to earning national championship medalist honors.

The GCAA also announced the top coaches of each region of Division II. The University of Charleston's Will Johnson took the title for the Atlantic Region. He was joined by St. Thomas Aquinas' Stephen Ferrara (East), Georgia Southwestern's Darcy Donaldson (Southeast), Missouri-St. Louis' Troy Halterman (Midwest), Central Missouri's Tim Poe (Central), Oklahoma Christian's David Lynn (South Central) and Chico State's TL Brown (West). Greenwood held the top spot for the South Region. 

Johnson led the UC Men's Golf team to an impressive 2016 season, with many notable performances including wins in both the MEC Fall and Spring Classics and a second place finish in the MEC Championship. The team ended their 2016 run at regionals, placing 12th of 20 competing teams.

Johnson shares this latest honor with his title of 2016 Mountain East Coach of the Year on the women's golf side.
