CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Will Roberts scored a pair of goals as the Golden Eagle men's soccer team easily dismantled Mercyhurst University by a 4-1 score Sunday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium.
Â
The Golden Eagles fired 26 shots at the Laker keeper over 90 minutes, 12 of those on frame which Alex Brems had to come up with some quality saves to keep Mercyhurst in the contest. It remained a scoreless contest after 45 minutes of play despite Charleston dominating possession but couldn't find the back of the net.
Â
It wasn't until the 51
st minute before the Golden Eagles put one past Brems with a little help from the Lakers. Roberts crossed a ball along the six that hit a recovering Kyle Johnson who inadvertently put the cross in the back of his own net to give UC a 1-0 lead. Just four minutes later Charleston earned a PK which Roberts neatly tucked away into the left bottom corner of the net to double the lead at 2-0.
Â
In the 74
th minute Jermaine Windster was the recipient of a nice give-and-go play with Patrick Guier to score his first of the season and give the Golden Eagles a comfortable 3-0 lead with only 16 minutes to play. Roberts added the final tally two minutes later after getting loose in the box and receiving a Bruno Dos Santos pass inside the six that he easily put away for UC's fourth goal on the afternoon.
Â
Mercyhurst earned a late PK which Mark Roche put past UC keeper Fabian Veit despite guessing the right way Roche was going with the attempt.
Â
Charleston returns to play Wednesday evening as they open Mountain East Conference action against Urbana University at 7:15 p.m. at Schoenbaum Stadium.Â
