Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles played host to the visiting Blue Knights of Urbana University for the team's first Mountain East game of the 2016 season. UC found the back of the net in the 12th minute when transfer Ida Garberg (Gjoevik, Norway) drove to the end line and served a negative ball to freshman Cassandra Forster (Vaxholm, Sweden) for the 1-0 lead.
Chanelle Bondurant of the Blue Knights would quickly answer as she collected a ball on a breakaway and finished to level the match at 1-1. UC did not waste any time finding their form as freshman Rachel Neff (Commercial Point, OH) served a quality ball across the face of goal to transfer Marieke Kramer (Megchelen, Netherlands) to make the score 2-1. Neff finished the first half scoring as she received a through ball from Garberg to score UC's third goal of the first half.
UC scored an additional two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to make the game's final 5-1. The fourth goal was credited to transfer Fern Peters (Columbia, MD). Peters finished the shot off the far post and in after receiving a square ball from freshman Brooke Garey (Macadonia, OH). The fifth and final goal of the match was a 40 yard service into the box by junior Kelci Pettiford-Winters (New Albany, OH). Junior Ivey Nucilli (Fairmont, WV) calmly redirected the ball into the back of the net.
UC outshot Urbana 18/6 on the day. Urbana's keeper Kristy McCullah managed to save five shots and UC's keepers, Zoe Zyta (Listowel, Ontario) and Carol Burgess (Malvern, PA), combined for three saves. UC returns to action on Friday as the visiting Hilltoppers of West Liberty come to town for a 5pm game. UC will then host WV Wesleyan on Sunday at 5pm.
