Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- University of Charleston celebrated the Grand Opening of the H. Bernard Wehrle Sr. Athletic Arena Saturday afternoon but found themselves on the losing end of both  one-possession games resulting in a sweep by the visiting Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Despite the losses, Charleston received stellar individual games from Jordyn Peck and Elliot Cole.  Peck broke out of a recent slump to score 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting to pace the Golden Eagle women, while Cole had the performance of the day, scoring 39 and breaking a school-record with 12 made three's for the Golden Eagle men.
The Golden Eagles rode the buzz of a packed arena in each of the games, but in the end both the Bobcat women and men had just enough to leave Charleston with a couple of dramatic wins. Â
UC women were able to carry a four-point, 38-34, lead into halftime but an enthused Bobcat team emerged from the locker room to outscore the Golden Eagles by eight to take a 54-50 advantage into the final ten minutes. Â The Bobcats extended their lead to seven points but a late furious rally by Charleston narrowed the gap to two points following a layup by Anna Hayton with 30 seconds to play. Â On the other end Wesleyan only converted on one of two free throws to give UC an opportunity to tie the game with a triple but Peck's long range shot was off target. Â Mya Walker cleaned up the miss with a put back, but it was a little too late for Charleston as the Bobcats sank two from the stripe with one second left for the three-point victory.
The Golden Eagle men started slow but quickly got on track behind Cole's record breaking day. Â Wesleyan just wouldn't go away, mostly behind the play of Mo Berchie who finished with 34 points on the afternoon, 23 after halftime. Â Charleston looked to have the game in-hand with a 78-71 lead with 25 seconds left on the game clock, but a Bobcat three then a steal trimmed the Golden Eagle lead to two, 78-76, with 11 seconds to go. Â Lejavius Johnson was only able to make one of two free throws that gave Mo Berchie a chance to tie the game with a three which he swished as the clock expired.
UC took their first lead of overtime with 32 seconds to play after a Keir Anderson layup but Wesleyan's Todd Clay drained a three from the corner while getting fouled for a four-point play that all but sealed the game for the visiting Bobcats. Â UC had one final chance to tie the game after a missed Anderson free throw but Justin Coleman's put back rimmed out.
Charleston goes on the road to play Glenville State on Monday evening before returning home Thursday evening to host West Virginia State University.
