Charleston, W.Va.—University of Charleston turned the tables on West Liberty University Thursday evening at the Wehrle Sr. Athletic Arena, avenging a 22-point loss earlier in the season with a 65-47 victory over the visiting Hilltoppers.
Â
It was somewhat of a slow start for UC as West Liberty scored the first five points of the game forcing coach Adam Collins to pull his starters and replace them with a fresh five. The new five gave Charleston the lift they needed both on offense and defense, outscoring WLU 14-3 the remainder of the quarter.
Â
UC turned up the defensive pressure again the second, limiting the Toppers to just 16 points total for the half on 22% shooting from the floor. Meanwhile, Jordyn Peck was nearly unguardable for the Golden Eagles on her way to 19 first half points as UC carried a 20-point, 36-16, lead into the break.
Â
West Liberty changed their game plan coming out of the break and made a commitment to finding opportunities in the paint. Despite pushing the lead out the 23 points, Charleston saw the Toppers trim the lead to single digits and only trail by 10 heading to the fourth. After the game Collins indicated he first five minutes of the third quarter continues to be concern for the young Golden Eagles.Â
Â
Nonetheless, UC withstood the Topper rally and again pushed their lead out to as many as 19 before settling for the 18-point, 65-47 win.
Â
The Golden Eagles scored 15 points off of 13 Hilltopper turnovers to improve to 7-12 on the year and 6-7 in MEC play. West Liberty moves to 6-13 overall and 5-8 in league action with the setback.
Â
Jordyn Peck led all players in the game with 28 points and seven rebounds for Charleston. Abby Watson chipped in 11 points over the course of the evening.
Â
