CHARLESTON, WV. — The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee announced today the field of 38 teams for the 2017 Division II Men's Soccer Championship.
Two to six teams were selected from each of the eight regions. Teams from the same region will be paired for first- and/or second-round competition, which will be conducted November 9-12 on campus sites. Third-round/quarterfinals will be held on campus sites and completed by November 19. The semifinals and final will be played November 30 and December 2 at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri, hosted by Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Rockhurst University and Kansas City Sports Commission. In the 2016 championship, Wingate University claimed the program's first national title with a 2-0 victory over University of Charleston (West Virginia), becoming the first national champion in its conference.
The No. 1 University of Charleston men's soccer team is back in the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight season. The Golden Eagles are set to host the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats at Schoenbaum Stadium, Saturday, November 11. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Charleston earned the at large bid with a record of 16-1-2, remaining undefeated until the Mountain East Conference final last Sunday. Charleston maintained the No. 1 spot in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. West Virginia Wesleyan (12-5-3) enters the tournament as an automatic qualifier after narrowly beating the Golden Eagles in the MEC tournament final.
It will be the fourth time the two schools will meet this season, each team tallying a win, and a draw from the final game of the regular season.
