Golden Eagles Fall In Regular Season Finale

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Charleston Women's Basketball (10-18, 9-13 MEC)  dropped its season finale to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State (14-14, 12-10 MEC).

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE – West Virginia State 58; Charleston 53
LOCATION – Institute, W.Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless two first two minutes Abby Watson drained a three to put the Golden Eagles on the board. Sydney Bates tied the game up for the Yellow Jackets on the next possession. State began to pull away half way through the first quarter. UC would bring the score within 5 points, but would close the first quarter down 16-10.
- The Yellow Jackets built a sizeable advantage during the second quarter leading by as many as 16, but UC would cut the lead to 10 going into the half down 21-31. 
-  West Virginia State outscored UC 12-8 following the break to close the third quarter up 43-29.
- UC fought back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Yellow Jackets 21-9 to bring the score within 2 with just over a minute left in regulation (50-52). State would capitalize on late free throws to secure the 58-53 lead as time expired.

CHARLESTON INDIVIDUAL LEADERS 
- Sophomore Abby Watson led the Golden Eagles scoring 11 points and bringing down 12 boards. 
- Jordyn Peck tallied 10 for UC.

YELLOW JACKET INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Aurreshae Hines led State with 24 points.
- Shealyn Shafer snagged 10 rebounds in the win. 


FROM THE SCORER'S TABLE
- The Golden Eagles shot 32.8 percent from the field while West Va. State 32.7 percent.
- Charleston outscored the Yellow Jackets in the paint 28-18. 


UP NEXT
-The Mountain East Conference Tournament is set to begin March 1, 2017. Matchups will be released after all regular seasons have concluded.
