Golden Eagles Close Out Spring Tournament with Two Wins on Thursday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  Charleston Softball (8-7, 0-0 MEC) took home two more wins on the final day of the spring tournament. The team topped Edinboro (7-4, 0-0 PSAC) 9-0 in the first matchup of the day, and took the second game against Slippery Rock (4-9, 0-0 PSAC) 10-5.

THE BASICS
GAME 1 – Charleston 9; Edinboro 0
GAME 2 – Charleston 10; Slippery Rock 5
LOCATION – CLERMONT, Fl.

CHARLESTON VS. EDINBORO
-The two teams went scoreless in the first three innings of competition. Charleston was able to get the ball rolling in the bottom of the fourth inning. Karli Pinkerton hit a single to third base followed by a single by Monica Carter that advanced Pinkerton. Freshman Haleigh Christopher grounded out to short stop but allowed the two runners to advance. With Pinkerton on third, Laura Ashlock bunted for a single sending Pinkerton home for Charleston's first score of the game.
-After Edinboro sent no runners home at the top of the fifth the Golden Eagles sent five runners home to close out the inning. With Natalie Beck on third base Rachelle Toppings stole second. Beck was able to get home on the throwing error by the Edinboro catcher. Ashlock then doubled to left field sending Pinkerton and Rachelle toppings home (4-0). During the next at bat another Fighting Scotts error allowed two more runners to cross home plate for Charleston bringing the score to 6-0.
-Edinboro was not able to shrink the Charleston advantage in the sixth inning, sending no runner home. Monica Carter hit a triple to right field allowing Toppings to score before Christopher stepped into the box and cracked a two-run homer to give the Golden Eagles the 9-0 lead and end the game.

CHARLESTON VS. SLIPPERY ROCK
-Rachelle Toppings hit a triple to get the game going for UC with Pinkerton on deck. Pinkerton singled out to left field bringing Toppings home for Charleston. Haleigh Christopher singled putting Pinkerton in scoring position. Ashlock grounded out to the short stop, but Christopher made it to second. Bailey Gogia nailed a single sending Pinkerton home. Slippery Rock sent three runners home in the bottom of the third to bringing the score to 3-2 with The Rock on top.
-Charleston sent the tying run home at the top of the second after Carter grounded out sending Pinkerton to second and Toppings home for the score. Haleigh Christopher single sending Pinkerton home. Charleston takes the lead 4-3. Slippery Rock went scoreless in the bottom of the second.
-After three scoreless innings Charleston increased their lead to 5 runs after sending 4 home in the top of the sixth. With Natalie Beck on third and Toppings on second Monica Carter grounded out allowing Beck to score the unearned run. Christopher sent Toppings home with a single to the pitcher. Ashlock homered sending two more runners home for UC bringing the score to 8-3.
-Charleston increased their lead to 7 after sending two more runners home in the top of the seventh. Slippery Rock also sent two runners home to cut the Golden Eagle advantage to 5, but it would not be enough. Charleston took the second game 10-5.

UP NEXT
-Charleston will face the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise on Saturday in a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Wise, Va.
