Charleston Softball Sweeps Concord in First Double Header of the Conference Play

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  Charleston Softball (10-7, 2-0 MEC) opened up their conference slate on Sunday afternoon against the Mountain Lions of Concord University (11-15, 0-2 MEC). The Golden Eagles took wins in both games of the double header. Game one saw two extra innings with the Golden Eagles scoring in the top of the ninth to seal their 3-2 victory. Game two was a clean 3-1 win for UC.

THE BASICS
GAME 1 – Charleston 3; Concord 2
GAME 2 – Charleston 3; Concord 1
LOCATION – ATHENS, W.Va.
RECORDS – Charleston (10-7, 2-0 MEC), Concord (11-15, 0-2 MEC)

GAME ONE
-At the top of the fifth Rachelle Toppings singled to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Karli Pinkerton. Freshman, Monica Carter doubled to right center field sending Toppings home for the first score of the game. Concord did not score during the bottom of the first.
-Neither team sent runners home in the second inning. With the bases loaded in the top of the third Laura Ashlock sent Karli Pinkerton home on SAC fly for the Golden Eagles second score of the game (2-0).
-With two more scoreless innings down for both teams and a third straight for the Golden Eagles the Mountain Lions sent two runners home to tie the game up in the bottom of the sixth. Neither team scored in the seventh inning forcing the game to go into extra innings.
-The two teams failed to bring any runners home in the eight and during the top of the ninth Freshman Haleigh Christopher doubled down the left field line sending Karli Pinkerton home who had reached second on an error by the Mountain Lion first baseman. Concord had one last chance to tie the game up in the bottom of the ninth with the Golden Eagles on top 3-2.

 GAME TWO
-After the Golden Eagles took game one of the double header, Monica Carter stepped up and homered at the top of the first to put UC up 1-0.
-A scoreless second inning put UC at bat at the top of the third. Rachelle Toppings singles to right field, then stole second. Pinkerton singled up the middle giving Toppings time to advance to third. Carter grounded out during her next at bat to send Pinkerton to second. Haleigh Christopher reached on an error by the the shortstop sending Toppings home on for the unearned run. Laura Ashlock singled during the next at bat sending Pinkerton home for the 3-0 lead.
-Neither team scored during the fourth or fifth inning. Charleston was unable to increase their lead at the top of the sixth. Concord's A. Beatty smacked a homer to left field for the Mountain Lion's first score of the game (3-1).
-Both teams failed to score during the seventh inning giving Charleston the 3-1 victory and the sweep of the series.

UP NEXT
-Charleston will face the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise on Monday in a double header that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
