CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  Charleston Softball (11-8, 2-1 MEC) split a double header with the University of Virginia College at Wise (10-8, 1-1 MEC) on Monday afternoon.

THE BASICS
GAME 1 – Cavaliers 8; Charleston 6
GAME 2 – Charleston 6; Cavaliers 3

GAME ONE
-Freshman MEC player of the week Haleigh Christopher got the ball rolling for Charleston with a homer to left field that sent Rachelle toppings home bringing the score to 2-0. Bridget Henzel stepped up and hit a grand slam for the Cavaliers bringing the score to 4-2.
-In the top of the second Bailey Gogia nailed a home run to center field for the Golden Eagles (4-3). With two runners on base Karli Pinkerton singled to second base sending the tying run home. UVA-Wise went scoreless in the bottom of the second.
-At the top of the third UC failed to send any runners home keeping the scored tied 4-4. During the bottom of the third Taylor Brandts sent a homer to left center to put the Cavaliers up 5-4.
-The Golden Eagles had two runners on in the the top of the fourth when freshman Monica Carter hit a single that sent both the tying run and the run that gave UC the 6-5 lead home.
-At the bottom of the fifth Olivia Cleary sent a 3-run homer to center field to take the 8-6 lead over the Golden Eagles. A scoreless fifth inning gave UC one last shot to tie the game up in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles came up short falling to UVA-Wise 8-6.
 
GAME TWO
-After falling in game one to the Cavaliers the Golden Eagles got the scoring started with a home run by Monica Carter. Wise put away 3 runs in the bottom of the first to take the 3-1 lead.
-Both teams went scoreless in the second and third innings. Charleston brought the score within one run when Haleigh Christopher banged her second home run of the day to center field in the top of the fourth inning. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth.
-Laura Ashlock sent a double to right field to give UC the 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth. During the next at bat Alyssa Stanley hit a singe down the left side allowing Logan Walkosz score for UC (5-3).
-With Rachelle Toppings on base, Monica Carter hit a sacrifice to center field sending Toppings home and sealing the victory for the Golden Eagles (6-3).

-The Golden Eagles home opener against Ohio Valley will begin at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
