UC Softball Cruises Past Salem in Thursday Double Header

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  Charleston Softball (13-8, 3-1 MEC) took home a pair of wins in Thursday's double header against Salem International (7-17). The Golden Eagles topped Salem, 8-2 in game one, and then closed game two out in 5 innings with a 14-0 victory.

THE BASICS
GAME 1 – Charleston 8; Salem 2
GAME 2 – Charleston 14; Cavaliers 0
LOCATION – CHARLESTON, W.Va.
RECORDS – Charleston (13-8, 3-1 MEC), Tigers (7-17)

GAME ONE
-After a slow start for both teams Charleston scored their first run of the game after Ansley Warner was walked with the bases loaded sending Haleigh Christopher across home plate.
-At the top of the fifth inning Sydney McPherson sent a double to center field allowing Morgan Atkinson to score the tying run for the tigers. Two batters later Salem took the lead when Sam Perez grounded out to the shortstop allowing Mendez to head home from third (2-1).
-During the bottom of the fifth, Haleigh Christopher cracked a double sending Karli Pinkerton home to tie the game up for the Golden Eagles. With the bases loaded Ansley Warner sent a tripled to right field sending three runs home bringing the score to 5-2 UC. After a scoreless inning for Salem, Haleigh Christopher sent her ninth home run of the season sending 2 runs home bringing the score to 7-2.
-With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth Natalie Beck singled to left center field sending the eight run of the game home.
-Salem had one more chance to stay alive in the top of the seventh, but three straight outs ended the game with UC on top 8-2.

 GAME TWO
-During the bottom of the first the Golden Eagles got the ball rolling when Monica Carter sent Rachelle Toppings home after grounding out to the short stop. Christopher doubled to left center sending Karli Pinkerton home bringing the score to 2-0.
-To start the second inning the Alyssa Stanley tripled to left center, then scored on a wild pitch (3-0). Natalie Beck and scored on an error by the Salem Short Stop. Haleigh Christopher sent her second double of the game to left center field sending Carter and Pinkerton home (6-0).
-Laura Ashlock homered during the next at bat sending Christopher home (8-0). UC scored 3 more runs during the bottom of the third before Hannah Kowach nailed her first career home run that sent three more runs home bringing the score to 14-0 UC.
-A scoreless fourth inning gave Salem the top of the fifth to stay in the game, but the were unable to score to give UC the 14-0 victory.
 
UP NEXT
-Charleston will host Wheeling Jesuit on Friday for a double header. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
