BECKLEY, W.Va. – University of Charleston completed their historic record-breaking season on Sunday, falling in the Mountain East Conference Baseball Championship to Shepherd University, 13-6, at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
The Golden Eagles were forced to play three games on championship Sunday, working their way out of the loser's bracket after falling to the eventual champion late Sunday evening. The loss came after a run in which the Golden Eagles, who clinched the final spot for the conference tournament in the final weekend of the regular season, won four consecutive games. That stretch included two wins earlier in the day on Sunday — an 18-2 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan and a 13-11 triumph against Shepherd — before coming within a game of their first-ever MEC title.
Four Golden Eagles were selected to the All-Tournament team for their performances during the MEC Championship: Lee Carneal (SS), Brandon Harris (P), Steven Davis (C), and Nick Wilson (DH).
University of Charleston finished the season with 34 wins, more than doubling last season's 16-win season in coach Andrew Wright's first year at the helm of Golden Eagle Baseball. It also marked the first year that the University of Charleston has played in the MEC Baseball postseason after finishing third in the MEC South.
