University of Charleston broke the single-season win record for Golden Eagle Baseball, picking up their 30
th win on the year by defeating the Yellow Jackets 9-2 in Monday's doubleheader opener. UC used 4-run innings in the both the third and fourth innings to cruise to the record-setting performance, getting 2 RBI games from Colby Johnson, Gianfranco Morello and Lee Carneal to pace the Charleston offense.
Jonathan Carr didn't have his best stuff on the mound for UC but worked five innings to pick up his fifth win on the season. The win put Charleston one win closer to capturing a share of the MEC South Division title, needing a 4-game sweep of the Yellow Jackets.
UC looked to be on their way to their 31
st win and the No. 1 seed from the South in the upcoming MEC Baseball Championship, taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning against the host. The Yellow Jackets didn't want to end their season with a 4-game sweep by their rival and finally put together their best offensive performance of the two day, scoring 10 runs over the final three innings to take the final game of the series, 11-8.
Charleston still advances to the 2017 MEC Baseball Tournament as the South Division No. 3 seed and is set to face the North Division Champion, Shepherd University. The Golden Eagles and Rams square off in the tournament opener on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va. This is the first postseason appearance for Charleston since joining the Mountain East Conference in 2013.
