How it Happened
After dropping a tough decision at home to Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday night, Charleston came out focused against the Hilltoppers and claimed a 17-8 lead after the first 10-minute quarter. Trailing by nine, 19-10, in the second, West Liberty answered with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the afternoon. The run was led by WLU's Marissa Brown, a junior transfer from Youngstown State, who led all scorers with 26 points with 12 of those coming in the second 10 minutes. Charleston continued to battle and found themselves trailing by just one, 31- 30, heading into halftime.
After falling behind by six, 42-36, early in the third quarter, UC responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the second half at 43-42 at the 4:01 mark of the third following a made free throw by Abby Watson. The Golden Eagles built on their third period lead, extending it to five, 52-47, after a Brooklyn Pannell triple only to see West Liberty score the final six points of the quarter to carry a 55-54 lead over Charleston heading into the final frame.
UC got behind early in the fourth, 66-58, but a feisty Octavia Loll kept Charleston within striking distance by attacking the rim and getting shots up inside the paint, scoring 12 of her 22 points in the fourth. It wouldn't be enough though as WLU's Johnie Olkosky canned three huge triples and helped the Toppers defend their home court with an 84-76 win over the Golden Eagles.
