CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston men's soccer team won its opening game in the NCAA Atlantic Regional in a manner that has become old hat — holding its opponent scoreless.
That happened Saturday for the 18th time in 20 matches, as UC advanced with a 1-0 win over Millersville at Schoenbaum Stadium. That moved Charleston (18-0-2) into the tournament's third round and a meeting with West Chester, date and time to be determined. West Chester defeated Notre Dame College 2-1 on Saturday to advance.
All UC needed for the win was a Javier Gonzalez goal, on an assist from Christos Charalambous, in the match's 40th minute. Charleston sophomore goalkeeper Ewen Le Gallo got a little bit of work in Saturday, stopping all three of Millersville's shots on goal.
That many chances are hard to come by against the Golden Eagles. Saturday was just the third time this season that UC's defense allowed opponents to record three shots or more on goal in a match.
Charleston has gone five straight matches without allowing a goal. That comes after notching scoreless streaks of six and seven matches already this season.
