Golden Eagles Hold off Fighting Falcons in MEC Opener

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Golden Eagles battled to a 63-55 victory over the Fighting Falcons on Saturday.

How it Happened
Charleston gained an early lead in the first, and maintained their advantage to a six-point lead going into the second. The Golden Eagles were up 18-12. With the Falcons close behind the Golden Eagles clung to the lead through the second. With no lead changes the two teams went into the break, with Charleston up 25-22. The Golden Eagles shot 45 percent from the field, led by Anna Hayton who tallied six points to start. Sophomore guard Brooklyn Pannell notched six rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles.
 
The Falcons took their first lead of the game to start the second half with a layup by Brooke Kurucz. The Golden Eagles took the lead back in the waning minutes of the third, but struggled to pull away by more than seven points. Charleston would head into the fourth up 40-33 on the Falcons.  
 
Once again the final period the Falcons kept the score close, but as time winded down Fairmont had no choice but to put the Golden Eagles on the line, after shooting 76 percent from the free-throw line in the second half Charleston came away with the victory.
