CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Another match, another win, another shutout and another Mountain East Conference championship for the University of Charleston men's soccer team.
Gabriel Cabral and Manuel Perez each scored a goal, and the UC defense held Wheeling Jesuit to just two shots on goal, to push the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 win over the Cardinals on Sunday at Schoenbaum Stadium. With the win, UC (17-0-2) clinches an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II tournament.
Charleston, the defending Division II national champion, will learn its bracket during the selection show at 6 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.
UC has allowed just three goals the entire season, and Jesuit (10-6-3) scored two of them in a 3-2 loss on Sept. 23. The Cardinals would not be nearly so lucky Sunday. Charleston's defense stymied WJU the entire match and keeper Ewen Le Gallo turned away the two Cardinal shots he did face.
It was the 17th shutout in 19 matches this season for the Golden Eagles.
UC got the only goal it needed in the match's 41st minute. Cabral scored on a penalty kick to make it 1-0. Charleston got an insurance goal in the 48th minute from Perez, off an assist from William Clague, and the Golden Eagles stayed in control the rest of the way.
Charleston peppered Jesuit keeper Josh Zimmerman with shots on goal throughout the match. Zimmerman faced 12 and recorded nine saves.
The Golden Eagles have won five MEC tournament championships in the six seasons the conference has held a tournament. The only year UC fell short was 2017, losing to West Virginia Wesleyan before going on its national championship run.
