How it Happened
SET 1
The University of Charleston rolled out to a huge lead over Princeton, using the excitement from last night's victory to take a 21-12 advantage. The Tigers tried to claw their way back in to the set, narrowing it to 24-20 before the Golden Eagles closed out the opening set on a Greg Luck service error. UC continued to service at a high level, dishing out 4 aces in the opening set with a pair coming Eugene Stuart.
SET 2
UC raced out to a 9-6 in the second set only to their lead erased by four consecutive blocks by the Tigers with George Huhmann a part of three of them, giving Princeton a 10-9 lead. Trailing 21-15 late in the set, Charleston recaptured the magic to win seven of the next eight points to tie the game at 22-22, getting good work from their middles Stuart and Adriel Roberts. UC grabbed a pair of points behind Stuart's serve to go up 24-22 only to see the Tigers run off three straight to retake the lead at 25-24. Charleston and Princeton traded points all the way until 32-32 when UC caught a break on a controversial call and used it to close out the game 34-32 sending the Charleston faithful into a frenzy.
SET 3
Charleston and Princeton traded points for much of the first half of the third set before the Tigers started to build a comfortable lead at 14-8 at the midway point. UC was determined to get out the Innovation Center in three sets, fighting all the way back to tie the set at 19-19 following a kill by senior Ryan Santos. The Golden Eagles rattled off three more consecutive points on a block by the trio of Santos, Adriel Roberts and Anthony Rivera and a pair of Tiger errors to grab control the final set, leading 22-19. Leading 24-22, Anthony Rivera came up with his final assist of the evening to feed Max Senica for the match clincher and send Princeton back to New Jersey with a straight set loss.
