How it Happened
The Crimson jumped ahead of Charleston early, hitting at .600 for the opening set to take a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles, winning the opener 25-17. Jake Heavey led the way for Harvard with five kills and swinging perfect at 1.000.
Charleston played a much better second set, holding a 16-15 lead over the hosts late in the game following a Max Senica service ace. The teams traded points with Charleston having opportunities to close out the set with two set points only to see Harvard rally and take a 2-0 lead by taking the second set 30-28.
Again, Charleston and Harvard played an even set early on in the third with the game tied at 15-15 halfway through the set. Trailing 16-18, Harvard called an effective timeout coming out of the break to score four straight to take a 20-18 lead over Charleston and force a Golden Eagle timeout. Just like Harvard's fortune out of the break, UC rallied late to outscore the Crimson 7-3 down the stretch and force a fourth set.
Charleston was poised to force a fifth and deciding set with the Crimson, staying even with the hosts at the 10-10 mark of the fourth. Harvard used their home court advantage to run off seven straight points on the Golden Eagles to build a comfortable 17-10 lead on UC. The Golden Eagles couldn't muster up any late set magic, eventually dropping the set 25-19 and fall to Harvard 3-1.
