THE GAMES
GAME 1
Shepherd starter Ryan Potts pitched a gem in first game of Sunday's doubleheader, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout of the Golden Eagles in a 7-0 victory. Charleston's only hits came from Colton Bauer and Austin Hathaway while eight UC batters struck out. Hathaway reached base safely in all three appearances for the Golden Eagles, also walking twice.
After two strong starts for the Golden Eagles, Brandon Harris had a tough day on the hill for UC. The right hander allowed seven runs on nine Ram hits with all of the damage coming off five Shepherd homeruns. Christian Hamel and Nick Atkinson had two HR's each for the defending MEC champs. Jacob Kaiser did shine in relief for the Golden Eagles, working an inning and a third and allowing just one hit while striking out three Ram batters.
GAME 2
A five-run second inning by the Rams was more than enough for Shepherd, taking the second game 9-2 and completing the sweep of Charleston. Nick Atkinson continued to swing a hot bat for the Rams, going 3-for-3 and driving in a pair of runs. UC was able to generate more hits (9) and get runners on against Shepherd starter Justin Smith but struggled to bring them around. Colby Johnson and Colton Bauer each had RBI's for UC while third baseman Jack Brunetti was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double.
Charleston starter Robert Fultineer was banged around in his two innings of work, allowing five runs (2 earned) before making way for Jordan Peck. The redshirt freshman threw four innings in relief, giving up four runs on four hits. Peck's command was a bit off as he walked a pair and hit a pair of Ram batters.
