Christopher, Lucas Lead UC to Sweep of WVU Tech

CHARLESTON, WV – Charleston Softball made their 2018 home debut Tuesday afternoon, picking up a pair of wins over West Virginia University Institute of Technology to notch their seventh victory of the season.

Just the Basics
GAME 1: Charleston 5, WVU Tech 2
GAME 2: Charleston 6, WVU Tech 0
TEAM RECORDS Charleston (7-3), WVU Tech (1-10)

How it Happened
GAME 1:
Charleston trailed 2-1 heading to the their final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh before Haleigh Christopher provided some early season fireworks. Rachel Rusch got things started with a pinch hit single up the middle followed by a Karli Pinkerton single through the same spot to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  AJ Martin then got hit by Karina Atanacio's inside fastball to load things up.

Two outs later Christopher came to the dish needing to at least drive in one to force extra innings.  The sophomore catcher delivered something magnificent, a towering shot to left center field for the walk-off grand slam and give the Golden Eagles a 5-2 game one victory over the visiting Golden Bears.  It would be Christopher's fifth HR in just 10 games this season.  Carlee Lucas picked up the win in relief of Golden Eagle senior starter, Jessie Rowe.  Karli Pinkerton added three hits in four at-bats for UC.

GAME 2:
The Golden Eagles took advantage of six WVU Tech miscues in the field to score six runs between the fourth and fifth innings and give UC a 6-0 shutout victory over the Golden Bears.  Grad transfer Danielle Norton was seeing the ball well in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs driven in that included a double to left center in the fifth that emptied the bases that were full of Golden Eagles.

Carlee Lucas was nearly untouchable for Charleston in the circle, allowing just one hit over seven innings and striking out eight to pick up the shutout win and capture her second victory of the afternoon.  The sophomore runs her record to 3-2 on the season and was her best outing since their opener at Winston-Salem State where she also tossed a complete-game shutout.
