LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Charleston volleyball team earned team academic honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the 2017-18 academic year, as announced on Monday by the association. This is the second year in a row, and the fourth for the program. The Golden Eagles were one of 198 Division ll teams to earn the honor while a record 973 teams were awarded for the 2017-2018 year.
In the classroom, the three Golden Eagle volleyball players were named to the All-MEC Academic Team for recording a grade-point average of 3.70 or better, including Kelsey Matusic, and Amy Hu. In addition, Carly Granger
, Claire Lambert, Chloe Massaro, Catherine Morris, Jessica Sunnenburg, Alexis Tyree, and Lexi Woodyard
were each named to the Commissioner's honor roll for recording a GPA of 3.25 or higher during the fall.
The Golden Eagles also earned AVCA academic honors during 2016-17 with a team GPA of 3.4.
The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average.
A record 973 collegiate and high school teams were awarded the 2017-18 AVCA Team Academic Award, setting a single-season high for the annual award. At the NCAA Division II level, 128 programs earned team honors for the 2017-18 academic year.
