How it Happened
Charleston and Concord, the first and third place teams in the MEC, played evenly through the first 10 minutes but a triple by Anna Hayton as the first quarter expired put the Golden Eagles ahead by six, 20-14, led by Raziyah Farrington's eight points.
Hayton kept her roll going to begin the second, scoring UC's next four points to extend the Charleston lead to seven, 24-17, before having to leave with her second foul of the half. With Gracie Roberts and Hayton forced to leave with foul trouble, Coach Burke turned over the offense to Farrington and company. The senior didn't disappoint, extending UC's lead to 30-21 at the media timeout in the second quarter behind her 12 first-half points. Concord closed the half on an 8-0 with Charleston going scoreless the final four-plus minutes, cutting UC's lead to 30-29 entering the break.
The visiting Mountain Lions started the third with a fury, taking a lead then eventually pushing it out to nine points, 43-34, before the Golden Eagles got back on track following a Burke timeout. Charleston eventually claimed the lead late in third, 49-48, after a Gracie Roberts layup in transition but saw themselves trailing 51-49 entering the final frame.
Charleston opened the fourth on a 9-0 run before Concord got on the board in the quarter, but UC's lead had extended to seven, 61-54, at the midway point of the final 10 minutes. The Mountain Lions battled back, cutting the Golden Eagles to just two points, 61-59, with under two minutes to play. A turnover by UC's Roberts and subsequent foul put Concord at the stripe and trimmed the Golden Eagle lead in half, 61-60. Another empty possession from UC and foul on the other end allowed the Mountain Lions to tie the game at 61-61. A turnover by Charleston in the final three seconds gave Concord an opportunity to win it at the buzzer but Adreanna Pool's jumper at the horn couldn't connect forcing overtime.
Concord controlled the overtime period from the start, jumping out to six-point lead at 67-61 after scoring the first six points of the extra five-minute period. UC failed to get into an offensive rhythm in overtime and suffered their second consecutive loss, falling to the Mountain Lions, 75-71.
