Golden Eagles Sail Past West Virginia State

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles women's basketball team blew past the visiting West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon, defeating the visitors 92-64, going 10-2 in the MEC.

How it Happened
The first quarter of play was dominated by Charleston, as the Golden Eagles used their skill to outplay the visiting Yellow Jackets, leading throughout the first 10 minutes. UC's senior guard Raziyah Farrington led UC in points with seven, as the Golden Eagles edged State 23-11 heading in to the second quarter. Charleston went 8-13 from the field goal line, while the Yellow Jackets only went 5-13. UC also went 6-6 from the free throw line.
 
The second quarter was a similar story as the first, as the Golden Eagles broadened their lead as the visitors were unable to keep up with UC's momentum. Charleston's Anna Hayton led the Golden Eagles, totaling 17 points heading into the half. The Golden Eagles led 46-22, giving themselves a nice cushion for the second half of play. UC went 10-16 from the field goal line, compared to State's 4-16. UC totaled 16 points in the paint, and went 1-1 from the three-point line.
 
Charleston kept the tempo up starting the third quarter, as Farrington led the team with 21 points. Charleston continued to broaden their lead, leading by as many as 40 points throughout the quarter. The Yellow Jackets were not able to break Charleston's rhythm, trailing behind UC 78-42 going in to the fourth quarter. 
 
The Golden Eagles used the last quarter of the game to secure the win, as they defeated their cross-town rivals 92-64. Charleston scored 14 points in the fourth quarter of the game, going 4-15 from the field goal line, and snagging 10 rebounds.
