Golden Eagles Start 2019 Season with 12-2 Win over Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The University of Charleston Golden Eagles (1-0) opened their 2019 season with a 12-2 routing of Barton College (2-7) on the road. Freshman pitcher, Carly Turner started her UC career off with a two-run homer in the top of sixth for UC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Haleigh Christopher and Carly Turner led the Golden Eagles effort. Christopher went 3-for-5 from the plate, contributing two RBI's in the effort. Turner notched two hits on four attempts, with a two-run homer.
 
Turner also picked up her first win as a Golden Eagle. The freshman pitched six innings, with only four hits, and striking out nine batters.
 
Charleston jumped to an early three run lead in the top of the first. Brionna Bowman got the ball rolling with a double down the lf line, to send Carly Turner home. Gracie Donato knocked home Bowman and Christopher with a double to left center.
 
In the top of the second Christopher brought Junior third baseman, Karli Pinkerton home with a double to center field to bring the score to 4-0.
 
Barton scored its' two runs in the bottom of the second with a single by Taylor Freeman down the left field line to allow Samantha Santmyers and McCrae Knapp to score.
 
Karli Pinkerton started the fourth inning off by stealing second base, and moving to third on a throwing error, as Junior centerfielder Destinee Miles stole home for the Golden Eagles. On the next play Christopher single to send Pinkerton home.


In the top of the sixth Turner knocked her two-run homer to right center. The Golden Eagles popped in four more runs in the top of the sixth with RBIs from Kendall Marshall, Janey Schmidt, and Turner to end the day with the 12-2 win.
 

NEXT UP
Charleston will travel to Mount Olive N.C. to finish off opening weekend with a double header against the University of Mount Olive. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
