Golden Eagles' Complete Offense Lifts Charleston Over Gannon in Atlantic Region II Final

WEST CHESTER, PA – The University of Charleston Golden Eagles won their way through the Atlantic Region II tournament, to face the Mercyhurst University Lakers in the NCAA Super Regional next week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Senior right hander, Jack Brunetti pitched 8.2 innings for the win, only allowing six hits, and one run. With the win, Brunetti moves into the single season win leader for the Golden Eagles program with 10.  Jacob Kaiser came in to close striking out the last batter to seal the Golden Eagles victory.

The Golden Eagles tallied six runs on nine hits. Three of the runs were scored on the Gannon starter, Eric Sapp who took the loss after 4.1 innings of work.

Derek Dudek went 2-for-2 with three RBI to boost UC to victory, while Nick Wilson notched two hits and a run scored. Austin Hathaway continued to swing for the fences with his second homer of the weekend that knocked in two runs.

The Golden Eagles jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second with Brunetti on third, and first baseman on second. A wild pitch advanced the runners, scoring the first run for the Golden Eagles.

After three scoreless frames, the Golden Birds scored two runs on a homer to right center from Austin Hathaway, bringing the core to 3-1.

Trey Zeroski tallied three of the Knights four runs, while Brandon Wetherholt notched two runs in the loss.  The Golden Knights 4-though-9 batters went 0-for 23 on the day.

The Golden Eagles clung to their 3-1 lead until the top of the ninth inning. Cartt singled up the middle before the catcher, Nick Wilson beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second. During the next at bat both runners stole before Jesse Elliot who was hit during his at bat.  
 
With a 1-0 count Senior short stop, Derek Dudek hit a base clearing double to left center for the Golden Eagles 6-1 lead.
 
Gannon scored their lone run in the bottom of the ninth, just before Kaiser took the mound for Brunetti to close with two outs on the board.
 
UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles advance to the Super Regional, against the Mercyhurst Lakers on May 24.
