WISE, Va. - UVa-Wise advanced to the MEC Tournament final for a second-straight year with a 13-8 win over Charleston on Friday. The two teams waited over an hour at half time to let area storms move through to complete the game.
The Cavs got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first two minutes, but UC got on the board on a goal from Toriana Bates just a few minutes later. UVa-Wise controlled the majority of play for the rest of the first half and took a 6-2 lead into the half.
After the extended break, the teams opened the second half by trading goals. Charleston made a push going on a 4-1 run to make it 8-6 with still 22 minutes to play, but UVa-Wise recaptured the momentum getting four goals from four different players to take a 12-6 lead and help put the game out of reach and finish with a 13-8 final.
Katie Allen led the way for the Cavs with four goals, while Jesse French added a hat trick and three assists to finish with a game-high six points. Erin Smith had four caused turnovers and Elsa Girardo made eight saves and had seven ground balls. UVa-Wise helped harass Charleston into 32 turnovers on the day.
Peyton Harris, Brianna Rock and Samantha Youngman each had two goals for UC. Kyra Tye came up with 11 saves.
