Golden Eagles Down Panthers in Season Opener

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Golden Eagles swept the Claflin University Panthers to begin their 2020 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1:
In the top of the first inning with two runners on, Alyssa Lake reached on a fielding error by yhe Clafflin shortstop that slowed Emma Groe and senior third-basemen, Karli Pinkerton to score, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
 
It was the third inning before the Golden Eagles would score again, this time on a double to right field, scoring Destinee Miles, and Pinkerton for her second run of the contest. With the score at 4-0, Lake sealed the win for Charleston on a single to right field that sent Mackenzie Brown home for the 5-0 win.
 
Freshman pitcher, Dani Bauer made her debut on the mound for the Golden Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing only two hits, and striking out 11 batters. Alyssa Yungwirth took the mound for UC to close the game.
 
GAME 2:
After nine scoreless innings of play, the Golden Eagles got on the board, on a bunt from senior Destinee Miles that scored Janey Schmidt for the 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Megan Eder singled down the left field line that Miles, and Pinkerton bringing the score to 3-0.
 
In the bottom of the eighth inning Jada Ames grounded out to the third basemen but allowed Kadasi Damon to score for the Panthers. However, it would not be enough to force another extra inning, giving Charleston the 3-1 and sweep.
 
NEXT UP
Charleston will head to Barton College on Saturday, to continue their opening weekend of the 2020 season.
