UC Falls to EIVA Opponent George Mason

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Golden Eagle men's volleyball team played their first of a two-match weekend this evening as they took on George Mason University. The Golden Eagles fell to the Patriots in three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
George Mason was able to hop out to an early lead as they took the first four points of the match before surrendering a service error making the game 4-1. The Patriots would continue to widen their lead as they extended it to 9-3 before the first timeout of the set was taken. 
 
The Patriots held onto their six-point lead well into the set as they led late 20-14. Before the second timeout of the set, Charleston was able to close the gap to a score of 20-16 George Mason. 
 
The Patriots would continue to roll at the end of the set as they took the first by a score of 25-18. UC had seven kills in the set on 23 attempts with only one attacking error giving them a .261 hitting percentage while George Mason had 16 kills on 26 attempts with three attacking errors giving them a .500 hitting percentage. Both teams had their fair share of service errors as George Mason had six and Charleston had seven. Both teams had one block and one service ace. 
 
The second set was tight early on as it was knotted at seven all in the early stages. The game would remain tied even at the score of 15 all. The Patriots would take a four-point lead at 20-16 before the first timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Before the second timeout of the set was taken the score reached a point of 23-18 George Mason. 
 
The Patriots would hold on in the end to take the second set by a score of 25-20. UC had 10 kills on 23 attempts with five attacking errors netting them a .217 hitting percentage while the Patriots had nine kills on 22 attempts with three attacking errors giving them a .273 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles had one ace, one block and six service errors while George Mason had four aces, no blocks and six service errors. 
 
In the third set, George Mason hopped out to a 4-1 lead before the first timeout of the set was taken. George Mason took control of the game as they would widen their lead to 14-8 in the middle portion of the set. The score reached a point of 19-13 Patriots before the second timeout of the set was taken. 
 
George Mason would hold on in the end to run away with the set by a score of 25-21. UC had nine kills on 24 attempts with two attacking errors giving them a .292 hitting percentage. George Mason had 11 kills on 25 attempts and five attacking errors giving them a .240 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles had one ace, two blocks and seven service errors in the set while the Patriots had two aces, no blocks and four service errors. 
 
 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Freshman Jake Vorburger had eight kills in the match as well as one block and five digs. Junior Max Senica had seven kills as well as one block and three digs. Freshman Will Kimenhour had three blocks in the match. 
 
UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow night as they will round out the weekend with an evening match against the Pioneers from Tusculum University at 7:00 p.m.
