HOW IT HAPPENED
Five minutes into the contest the Golden Eagles got off to a commanding 9-4 lead, but the Falcons answered a couple Charleston misses with a three ball from Jada Marone to bring Notre Dame back within one. Charleston got back out to a 13-8 lead thanks to a pair of free throws from
Anastasiia Zakharova. With just over two minutes to play in the first quarter Marone knocked down a jumper and then a free throw to tie the game at 13-13. With just over a minute left in the quarter Abby Lee scored a tough fought layup to give the lead back to the Golden Eagles 15-13. A tough defensive stand along with two big rebounds from
Haley Moore secured the lead for Charleston going into the first break.
Coming out of the break UC went on a 5-0 run to post a 18-13 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. After a pair of free throws from Zakharova, the Golden Eagles went out to a 20-15 lead. Marina Adachi knocked down the first bucket of the second quarter for Notre Dame with just under six minutes to play tying the game at 22. Charleston answered by going on a 6-0 run, but Nadia Jackson hit a big-time jumper to stop the run, making it a 28-24. The two teams went on a four-minute scoring drought that was ended by Charleston when Haley Moore hit a free throw to make it 29-24. After a big three point shot by Lizzie Imrie for the Falcons that made it 29-27, Zakharova hit a pair of free throws with under two minutes left in the half. On the next possession, Zakharova drove to the basket to put the lead up to 33-27 Golden Eagles.
Trinity Palacio hit a free throw with four seconds left in the half to push the lead to 34-27 for Charleston before the half.
Charleston opened up the scoring in the second half with a bucket from senior, Pannell. The Golden Eagles got out to a ten-point lead just two minutes into the second half. After a jumper from Pannell, the Golden Eagles were out to a 42-29 lead. On the next possession, the Falcons got a big rebound and layup from Tamia Ridley to help jumpstart the scoring for Notre Dame. As Charleston began to pull away, Marone went on a 5-0 run herself to bring the Falcons back within seven. After a couple of empty possessions from the Golden Eagles, Zakharova answered hit a jumper to end the scoring drought. On back-to-back possessions, Marina Adachi knocked down two jumpers bringing the score to 46-40 Charleston. The Falcons locked in on the offensive boards as Tamia Ridley came down with two rebounds and layups making the game 46-44. Palacio hit a jumper with just over a minute left to help secure a 48-46 lead for the Golden Eagles going into the fourth quarter.
Pannell scored on back-to-back Golden Eagle possessions to start the fourth quarter giving Charleston the 52-46 lead. After Moore made an open layup, the Falcons scored seven straight points to bring the game within one. On the next possession for Notre Dame, Marone knocked down a big time three to give the Falcons a 56-55 lead, their first of the game. The two teams went on a small scoring drought that was ended by Zakharova when she made a pair of free throws, making the game 57-56 Golden Eagles.
Erykah Russell pushed the lead to three on a tough finish after picking up her own offensive rebound. The Falcons weren't done yet, Imrie made back-to-back free throws along with a clutch three to tie the game at 61 from Adachi. With 30 seconds left, Pannell came up with a huge steal and knocked down two free throws after a hard foul, putting Charleston up by two. Zakharova, who scored 17 points, made a pair of free throws to push the lead to four. With five seconds left,
Dakota Reeves put the game out of reach after knocking down her two free throws, as Charleston went on to win 67-62.
