Football Bounces Back at Home

Charleston, W.Va- The Golden Eagle Football Team looked to bounce back from a tough loss to UNC Pembroke. They would face off against the Bobcats of West Virginia at Laidley Field on Thursday night.

How it Happened
Although the Golden Eagles were plagued by injuries due to the short week, running back Josh Brown, and kicker Bryce Santos stepped up to lead Charleston to victory.
 
The Golden Eagles would strike quickly when Colby Cooper scooped up the first punt of the day and returned it 83 yards. The Golden Eagles went up 7-0 with 10:52 left in the first quarter.
 
The hot first quarter would not end there. Guy Myers found the endzone on a 1-yard scamper to put the Golden Eagles up 14-0 with 3:38 left to play in the first.
 
After a quick three and out by the UC defense, Guy Myers threw a 47-yard bomb to Marquis McCoy to put the Golden Eagles up by three touchdowns with 1:20 remaining in the first half.
 
The second quarter was much less action packed as the only scoring would come from a late field goal by Tim McCutchen. At half the Golden Eagles led 24-0.
 
Josh Brown opened up the second half in a big way by firing off a 35-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. After a completed extra point by McCutchen the Golden Eagles took a 31-0 lead.
 
With 2:46 left in the third quarter, veteran Phillip Freshman would score his first touchdown of the year off a pass by Guy Myers. Charleston took a 38-0 lead in the third quarter.
 
Jackson Jones would come out in the fourth quarter looking for blood. He had his first house call of the year, intercepting quarterback Jamir, Boyd and running it back 20 yards for the score.
 
The Bobcats showed some life late in the fourth quarter, putting together a solid 50-yard drive to put up their first points of the day. The score would go to 45-6 with 8:42 left in the game.
 
The Golden Eagles entered victory formation with 1:36 left in the game. The Golden Eagles came away victorious by a score of 45-6.
 
The UC Athletic Training Staff did an excellent job all day responding to crises on the field. A big shoutout to Joe Lynch and Mike Nyquist on their efforts in keeping players healthy.
 
Guy Myers ended his day with 223 yards passing and two touchdowns. Josh Brown, who replaced the injured Tyreik Mcallister had 107 yards rushing. Marquis McCoy had 71 yards receiving and one touchdown.
 
Tizlam Muhammad collected 1.5 sacks six total tackles and 2 tackles for loss and Christian Van Horn collected one sack and 3 tackles for a loss. 
 
Up Next
The Golden Eagles will face off against Wheeling University at home on Saturday, November 6 at 12 PM. This will be the final home game for the Golden Eagles in 2021.
