Keith Williams and Lamont McManus teamed up to score 31 points to lead the University of Charleston men's basketball program to an important 78-72 nonconference victory over visiting Slippery Rock University. For the third consecutive game, UC would never trail in the contest.
McManus would score the game's first four points to get UC moving in the right direction early. Slippery Rock responded with four straight of their own before a 5-0 run by UC would create a small window of separation for the hosts. UC would take their largest lead of the night, 19-10 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Slippery Rock would battle back to cut the lead to one before a basket by UC's Tyler Eberhart just before the final horn gave UC a 35-32 lead at intermissions.
UC scored the first five points of the second half to extend their lead to 40-32 and from there maintain a two possession lead for most of the first 12 minutes of the second half. However, Slippery Rock would make a final attempt at gaining a lead in the contest as they tied the game at 60-60. UC responded with a basket followed by Slippery Rock again tying the game at 62-62 with 5:31 to play. This time UC would respond with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes that would essentially be the deciding run to seal the 78-72 victory.
For the game, UC converted 51.9% of their field goal attempts, including seven three-pointers at 41.2% while holding Slippery Rock to just 43.3% from the field and 26.1% from long range. A key stat in the game would be rebounding as both teams came in dominating on the glass. The Golden Eagles won this battle, outrebounding the visitors 36-26.
Keith Williams led UC in scoring with 16 points, followed by McManus' 15 points. Isaiah Gable contributed 10 markers as well.
With the win, the Golden Eagles move to 5-1 on the season while PSAC member Slippery Rock falls to 3-2.
UC will host #10 nationally ranked Fairmont State on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.
