HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first quarter was an exciting back and forth matchup between the teams. The Lady Yellow Jackets used the full court press to help create steals and extra possessions. The Golden Eagles adjusted well as they went back and forth for the entire first quarter. Both teams shot between 35 and 40% from the field. Evenly matched game throughout the first quarter despite
Erykah Russell picking up four fouls within the first seven minutes of the game which forced the senior forward to the bench until the start of the fourth quarter.
The second quarter was not much different than the first. Although Charleston outrebounded State 11-1 in the second quarter, both teams were able to put exactly 23 points each. Pannell led all scorers going into halftime with 16 points as the Golden Eagles were able to erase an early deficit and go into the half with just a two-point cushion.
Headed into the third, the contest remained a tight one, as the Lady Jackets continued to run the full court press trying to turn hard defense into easy offense. The Golden Eagles continued to stay poised and handle the pressure well. Charleston was able to keep the lead throughout the entire third quarter, as their largest lead was seven points during the frame.
In the fourth, The Golden Eagles outscored the Lady Yellow Jackets 32-13 and were able to build upon their lead and cruise to an 11
th straight victory. Pannell led all scorers with 35 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals and led the Golden Eagles to their best start in program history (11-0). The previous record of 10-0 was held by the 2005-06 Lady Eagles, a team that made an Elite 8 and was led by Lisa Lee, an All-American at Charleston.
