Golden Eagles Drop Road Contest vs Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The University of Charleston Men's Volleyball team dropped their Friday night contest against the Nittany Lions from Penn State University in three sets. Charleston was led by Maarten Bartels and Austin McKee with six kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start, playing very even back-and-forth volleyball with the Nittany Lions through the first half of the opening set, with Charleston tying the same at 7-7. Penn State took a quick five point lead after a couple attacking errors, and a service ace. They were able to continue this momentum, and convert on some more mistakes by Charleston. The set ended in the Nittany Lions favor, with a score of 25-20.

In the first set, the Golden Eagles had a hitting percentage of .091% while the Nittany Lions hit .292%. Penn State led the slight advantage in errors, as they had only five to Charleston's six.

The second set saw the Nittany Lions take an early lead, converting some attacking errors the Golden Eagles had, along with four aces. Penn State was able to close out the set 25-14, thanks to a service error, and two attacking errors.

Set three saw the Golden Eagles get out to a quick 4-1 lead before the Nittany Lions went on a 4-0 run to tie it at 13-13. Penn State was able to convert on more attacking errors and regain a 24-18 lead. Charleston made a push at the end, making it 24-21, but it was too late and the Nittany Lions were able to get the final point.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

Cal Fisher led the way for the Nittany Lions with 11 kills along with 12.5 points, while Cole Bogner had 31 assists. Bartles and McKee led the way for the Golden Eagles as he was able to record six kills. Diego Villafane had 26 assists in the game.

UP NEXT:

Charleston will return to action next Saturday night as they wrap up the series against Penn State University. Match one time is set for 7:00 P.M at the Rec Hall.
