Charleston Splits with Yellow Jackets in Home Contest

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — The University of Charleston Golden Eagles move to 25-7 after splitting with their cross-town rivals on Thursday afternoon. 

THE BASICS
Score: Charleston 1, WVSU 0; Charleston 3, WVSU 7
Location: Charleston, W. Va. — UC Softball Complex 
Records: Charleston (25-7, 18-4 MEC), WVSU (21-9, 18-4 MEC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1:
The two teams were deadlocked at 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Gracie Donato hit a bomb to center field to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead. 

Charleston was able to hold off the opposition through the top of the seventh inning to take game one 1-0. 

Redshirt Freshman pitcher, Dani Bauer took the complete game win, moving to 11-3 on the season. 

Game 2: 

Donato again led the Golden Eagles offensive effort with a double in the bottom of the first that scored Karli Pinkerton for the 1-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the third, Donato hit her second homer of the day for the 2-0 Golden Eagle lead. But, in the top of the fourth the Yellow Jackets plated six runs to take the lead midway through the contest. 

Charleston cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice from Allysa Lake, but the visitors would seal the win, scoring on an error in the top of the seventh for the 7-3 win. 

Autumn Thompson picked up win number nine for the season, while Mahealani Haegele took her first loss of the 2021 season, facing five batters in the fourth inning. 

UP NEXT
Charleston will travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday night for a double header set to begin at 5 p.m.
