Charleston Bounces Back, Takes Pair From Concord

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston baseball team bounced back in a big way on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Mountain Lions from Concord University in both ends of the doubleheader at Anderson Field. After surrendering two early runs in game one, Austin Henrich went the distance to pick up his 6th victory of the season. On the offensive end, Hayden Cartt added two home runs and three RBIs on the day.

Game Information (Game One)
Charleston 8, Concord 3
Records: Charleston (29-6, 23-4 MEC), Concord (13-18, 12-15 MEC)
Location: Anderson Field (Athens, W. Va.)
W|L|S: Austin Henrich (6-0) | Eddie Blake (2-2) | None

How it Happened
  • Henrich would be tabbed for two early runs, including a leadoff home run for the Mountain Lions in the first inning, but settled in allowing just four hits over the final six innings of play.
  • In the top of the third, Charleston tied the game up at 2-2 after Drew Hefner and Tyler Dellerman recorded back-to-back RBI singles to shift the momentum back to the Golden Eagles.
  • It was the Mountain Lions who would retake the lead in the bottom half of the 5th after Richard Ortiz grounded into a double play which brought home a run.
  • Trailing by a run, the Golden Eagles would score a pair on an RBI double from Braxton Boddorf which put Charleston on top 4-3 in the 6th.
  • Charleston added much needed insurance in the seventh after Hayden Cartt belted a solo shot, his first of two on the day, which extended the lead.
  • Arguably the play of the game, Andrew Berry converted on safety squeeze which squeaked past the pitcher and brought two run around to cap the scoring at 8-3.
  • Henrich worked around a two-out single in the seventh on his way to a clean inning and a Golden Eagle victory.

Game Information (Game Two)
Charleston 4, Concord 1

How it Happened
  • Much like game one, it was the Mountain Lions who took the early lead in the first inning, but they would fail to score again after Charleston starting pitcher Zane Lattig worked around an early RBI single.
  • Lattig would find himself in a jam in the third inning, but crisis was averted after Charleston went to Robert Fultineer in relief. Lattig finished his day logging 2.2 IP, allowing just one run on four hits while walking two and striking out one.
  • In the 4th, Charleston got the scoring started as Cartt connected on his second of the day, a two-run shot which scored Mitchell Vincent and gave Charleston a 2-1 lead.
  • Charleston plated one more in the inning after Bryce Toussaint doubled to left centerfield to score Colby Johnson and increase the lead to 3-1.
  • Fultineer logged 2.0 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit while striking out two. He was relieved by Dane Sykes, who picked up his first collegiate save after throwing 2.1 innings of hitless baseball while walking one and striking out three.
  • The scoring concluded in the 6th after Drew Hefner drove home Johnson, who ran around the tag at the plate and touched it from the far side to put the Golden Eagles on top 3-1.
