How it Happened
Â
After an energetic national anthem, the two squads traded baskets back and forth while a fast-ticking clock continued to wind down. Veteran guard, Anastasiia Zakharova, led the first quarter offensively with great poise as she was able to knock down two early three pointers in the contest and put in a jump shot right as time expired to end the quarter. For D&E, Freshman guard, Dream Cherry, matched Zakharova's three pointers with a rally of her own keeping her team within five at the end of one.
Â
To start the second, Zakharova started off with a high effort assist to Trinity Palacio underneath the basket followed by a fast layup from Anna Cardwell that forced D&E to use a timeout to gather themselves after the fast start from the Golden Eagles. It proved to be worthy as Allie Taylor of D&E drained a three pointer right off the break. Charleston began to separate the score line as they stalled D&E's offense long enough to go up 39-26 with 3:00 left in the quarter. Many points for the Golden Eagles came from consistent shooting from the free throw line. To end the quarter, Markyia McCormick drilled a pair of three pointers to give Charleston a comfortable 47-30 at the half.
Â
McCormick picked up right where she left off and hit another shot from beyond the arc less than a minute into the third quarter. D&E answered back with two of their own three pointers to get back to within twenty with 6:30 left to go. Baskets began to fall left and right for the Senators for a minute and a half, mainly led by Marissa Berlin putting up baskets inside the paint. Dakota Reeves began to fire up from deep with consecutive three pointers with a minute remaining in the quarter. At the end of three, UC held their lead and extended it to 73-51 over the Senators.
Â
D&E landed some deep shots at the beginning of the fourth quarter in an attempt to narrow the large lead. UC, however, answered back every point that was put on them and proceeded to grow their lead even further. A couple of the younger Golden Eagles were able to see some action tonight which is always a good sign from head coach Tianni Kelly. In the end, The Golden Eagles took the victory 90-72.
