Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Charleston Takes Sole Possession of Second Place in the MEC with Win Over Bobcats

Charleston, W.Va-- The University of Charleston men's basketball team looked to move their win streak to three games with a win over host West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats.

The Basics
Location: Rockefeller Center – Buckhannon, W.Va
Score: UC 89 WVWC 74
Records: Charleston (10-2, 6-1 MEC) Wesleyan (1-12, 0-7 MEC)

How it Happened
UC started off strong against the last place Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan. Veterans Lamont McManus and Keith Williams put Charleston up big after Williams drained a three to begin the game and McManus earned an and one bucket to follow. Williams and McManus combined to score 17 of the first 19 points in the game.

Halfway through the first half Eddie Colbert III gave UC what would be their largest lead of the night so far, putting the Golden Eagles up 31-18 with 10:09 left in the first period. The UC defense was strong in the first half as they forced seven turnovers and held the Bobcats to just 45 points. At the end of the half Jeremiah Keene made a layup in transition to put Charleston up 52-45.

The second half began with the Bobcats coming out firing. Tommie Pope would score the first basket a minute into the half and the lead would be cut to just 4 with two minutes gone in the second half. However, Tyler Eberhart would add to double UC's lead with authority just a few moments later. The 6'7" sophomore would slam home back to back dunks forcing a timeout by the Bobcats with 16:24 to play in the second half.

The Golden Eagles would extend their lead to as many as 20 late in the game. UC would not let off the gas as they continued to add to their lead late in the game by draining all eight of their free throws in the second half. After about a minute of fouling, the Bobcats eventually conceded the game as Keith Williams extended the lead to 20 with 1 minute remaining.

In the second half, UC dominated the Bobcats in the paint by outscoring them 20-8. They also had 8 fast break points to Wesleyan's none. As a team the Golden Eagles shot 53% from the floor and made 16 of their 17 free throws on the night. They also shot a scorching 40% from beyond the arch with 24 points off threes in the first half.

Keith Williams added to his outstanding week by putting up 23 points, with five three pointers and 7 rebounds to boot. Eddie Colbert, the 6'6" sophomore guard, put up 19 points and led the Golden Eagles with 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Up Next
UC will return to action on Saturday, January 8, 2022 as they return home to face the visiting Davis and Elkins Senators at 4:00 PM.
