Women's Soccer Drops Away Match in the Northern Panhandle

West Liberty, W. Va – After coming off of two wins, Charleston was unable to continue their win streak in the Northern Panhandle as they fell to the Hilltoppers of West Liberty University 1-2.

The Basics
Location: Highland Sports Complex
Score: UC 1, WLU 2
Records: UC (5-5, 5-3 MEC), WLU (4-4-1, 3-3-1 MEC)

How it Happened
In a day filled with rain, more than likely due to the ongoing Hurricane Ian, the matchup was delayed and eventually moved to an indoor soccer field at the Highland Sports Complex, a beautiful sports facility located in Triadelphia, WV.

Charleston would strike quickly in the 6th minute of the match as Madison Hansen took advantage of a handball in the Hilltopper box. As she always does, she sent her penalty kick shot to the back of the net to take the early 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles put up 12 shots towards the West Liberty goal in just one half of play, but only came away with the penalty kick goal from Hansen. The Hilltoppers only managed one single shot in the first half, which was undoubtedly appreciated by Charleston goalkeeper Jordan Maynard.

The second half entailed a different story. In the 60th minute of play, West Liberty's Isabella Bankovich found Claire Kelly in the box for the header and she leveled the score to 1-1.

Charleston's previous matchup with the Hilltoppers ended with a last-minute goal from Rachel Osborne for the win, but the Hilltoppers got their revenge. After the ball rattled around deep in Charleston territory, a waiting Marisa Knouff found an opportunity for a shot and launched one from no man's land finding the left corner of the net away from Maynard's reach to take the 2-1 lead and the win for the Hilltoppers.

Up Next
Charleston will be back in familiar territory at the Welch Athletic Complex this Wednesday as they take on the Wheeling University Cardinals on October 5th at 4:00 PM.
