How it Happened:
The stage was set as the packed Welch Athletic Complex awaited the kickoff of the Wednesday night Mountain East Conference men's soccer matchup between the visiting Senators of Davis and Elkins College and the home team the Charleston Golden Eagles.
From the first whistle the intensity was high from both squads, but Charleston had the slight edge over the Senators. The Golden Eagles were able to keep the ball in their attacking third for majority of the first half, taking five shots to Davis and Elkins one shot. The only shot that mattered for the Golden Eagles though came in the thirty-sixth minute. The magic sparked as a ball down the right wing was flicked on to
Eduardo Barros who passed it in front of the goal to
Felipe Mercado who did not quite have the shot and kicked it out in front of the goal to
Lewis Redding who found the bottom left corner and gave Charleston the 1-0 lead.
While Charleston entered the half with the lead, the Senators came out not ready to go home without putting up a fight. They had eight corner kicks and five shots on goal, but the stellar defense of
Tristen Rose and goalie
Marc Torrado kept the Senator bench quiet as they could not manage to get a ball past.
The lone goal from Charleston was enough to seal the deal and give Charleston their fourteenth win of the season and a first place standing in the Mountain East Conference.
