How it Happened
The Golden Eagles and the Falcons both came in with nine total wins on the year, and after a fairly aggressive and fast-paced opening 15 minutes, it was quite clear that these two teams weren't looking for a draw.
In the 15
th minute of play, Madison Hansen set up just outside the left edge of the box for a free kick. Hansen has scored quite a number of set-piece goals this season, so when she ripped the right corner of the net with her shot for the opening goal, she jogged back with a slight grin and placed herself right back on the defensive line as if the score was 0-0.
Just three minutes later, Jessica Schneider of Fairmont State was able to connect with Ari Christiansen's head on a corner kick to level the score 1-1.
In the 49
th minute, Fairmont State would take their first lead of the match. Alejandra Puerto Sorto played a great ball to Jessica Schneider on the right side of the field and Schneider would dribble her way around Jordan Maynard for the easy tap-in to take the 2-1 advantage.
The Falcons would score their third consecutive goal two minutes after and Schneider would once again play a role in the score. On a free kick, Schneider lifted a beautiful pass high in the air that found Kiera Kuzinski waiting in the box. Kuzinski fired the ball off her head into the net and Fairmont State would hold a 3-1 lead over Charleston.
Charleston would only put two shots on net for the rest of the match and goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy would have no trouble at all with her two saves. Fairmont State would earn their 10
th win of the year as they defeated Charleston with a final score of 3-1.
