Charleston, W. Va – On Saturday, the Golden Eagles hosted crosstown-rival West Virginia State for Senior Night and their last regular season match of the year. Charleston was looking to take one back from State as they lost 1-2 in their previous matchup with the Yellow Jackets back in September.
The Basics
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 1, WVSU 2
Records: UC (9-9-0, 9-7-0 MEC), WVSU (15-1-2, 13-1-2 MEC)
How it Happened
Charleston fired off 22 shots on the day with 10 threatening Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Laura Galindo, but they were only able to get one to fall as Galindo tabbed an impressive nine saves throughout the 90 minutes.
The first goal of the match came in the 40
th minute of play from West Virginia State's Esther Dhiramo. She volleyed a rocket from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the net out of Jordan Maynard's reach for the 1-0 advantage, an incredible goal for Dhiramo as she found her 10
th of the year.
Kate Eddy, however, would steal the momentum in the 43
rd minute. Alison Rothman played a beautiful cross into the box that found Madison Hansen's head for the shot. Galindo managed to put a hand on the ball and it bounced off the crossbar, but Kate Eddy found a way to put the rebound into the net with her reaching left foot to knot the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, the game would be decided in the final two minutes of action. A ball rolled into the Charleston box and three defenders, including Maynard, tried to jump on it to distinguish the threat. This, unfortunately, knocked the ball to State's Karem Rodrigues who shot the ball quickly into the net for the 2-1 lead late in the match. Charleston would not find a shot in the closing seconds and West Virginia State would escape once again with the 2-1 victory over the Golden Eagles.
