CHARLESTON, W.Va. – With a matchup of the top two teams in the MEC South Division, the Golden Eagles looked to remain undefeated at home against crosstown rival West Virginia State. The Golden Eagles came in at #4 in the Atlantic Region, while the Yellow Jackets came in at #9.

How It Happened
The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start taking a 3-0 lead on a kill from
Pia Selke. UC continued to dominate the entire set and maintained a 20-15 lead before going on a 5-0 run to end the set. A
Selke kill ended the set and gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set saw the Yellow Jackets get the quick 2-0 lead, however, a service ace by Maria Hernandez tied the set back up at 2-2. Late in the set, Charleston would expand their lead to 18-15 on a kill from McKenzie Damon. A
Sage Bearnson kill would then once again extend the lead to 22-19. A kill from
Selke would finish off the Yellow Jackets in set two and the Golden Eagles won the set 25-23.
In set three, the Yellow Jackets once again jumped out to the early lead, winning the first four points before a
Bearnson kill ended the run. The Golden Eagles would then go on a run of their own to tie the score at four on a blocking error by the Yellow Jackets. Back-to-back-to-back
Selke service aces resulted in the Golden Eagles taking an 8-5 lead. UC would continue to dominate the set. A
Selke kill would give the Golden Eagles a 15-9 lead making West Virginia State burn their second timeout of the set. Charleston would take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles were led by
Selke and
Bearnson with 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Maria Hernandez dished out 45 assists. Defensively, UC's
Erin Carmody had 19 digs to lead the way.
