How it Happened
After a hard loss to a 12
th ranked Fairmont State squad, the Golden Eagles had a different energy when they entered the arena Monday night. Charleston gained the lead within the first 30 seconds of the matchup when Lamont McManus began the night's scoring with a pair of free throws from the line. Keith Williams started his night off hot with a bucket from beyond the arc that was followed by McManus' layup from under the glass. A little later on, the lead grew to 12 after Keith Williams found a short-range jumper within the pain to put the Golden Eagles up 18-6 with 13:16 remaining in the half. The Battlers tried to battle back and they were able to cut the lead to just 5 after a three pointer, but Charleston answered and added on with a three pointer of their own, this time from Isaiah Gable. Towards the end of the half, there was a brief period where both sides were unable to find points for over two minutes because of some high-quality defense, but Charleston found a way to score enough to go up 45-35 headed into the locker-room.
Â
After the break, Charleston came out hot and grew the margin to 16 after a shot from beyond the arc form Jeremiah Keene. Only the players know what was said in the locker-room during the break by Coach Osbourne, but whatever he said sure seemed to work as Charleston then proceeded to play some basketball. Charleston did not lose the lead the entire night from tipoff to the final horn. Eddie Colbert had himself an impressive night shooting 8-11 from the field (72%) and going 3-4 (75%) from long range, ending up with 22 points. Keith Williams also had a solid outing as he went 8-9 from the field and racking in 19 tallies for the Golden Eagles. The biggest stat of the night was Charleston's points off turnovers. The margin of victory at the end of the night was 24 for the Golden Eagles; they were able to gain 26 points off of forced turnovers, which proved to be worthy. Charleston also shot a solid 17-18 (94.4%) from the free throw line. At the sound of the final horn, the Golden Eagles remained on top 95-71
