Baseball Sweeps Double-Header Against Fairmont State Thanks to a Walk-Off Winner in Game One by Costigan

CHARLESTON, W.Va- The Golden Eagle baseball team swept a pair of games on Monday afternoon at home against the visiting Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State.

Colt Webb got the nod on the bump in game one on Monday and he did not disappoint. The senior was dominant from the jump striking out the first three batter he faced. He would have just one hiccup on his outing after allowing a solo shot to right field by Fairmont third baseman Tyler Haskins. Other than that Webb was utterly dominant in his outing. He went seven plus innings while allowing just six hits, walking none and striking out a career high 15 Fairmont hitters. One of the big reasons for his success were his off-speed pitches including a splitter and his wipe-out slider. Colt was deadly efficient in the outing and was able to give the Golden Eagles a chance late in the game to produce some offense on the other end.

Charleston struggled off of starting pitcher Logan Smith who ended up dealing in the contest. The only sign of life came from backstop Tyler Dellerman who blistered a home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 1-1.

Cole Peshl came on in relief of Webb after Colt allowed a leadoff runner in the top of the eighth inning. The freshman worked out of a tough jam in the inning after a sac bunt by the falcons that moved a Fairmont runner to second base. Peshl gave up a single to the next batter and runners were at second and third with only one away in the eight. Peshl proceeded to throw darts to the next to batters and got out of the jam with back to back strikeouts, firing up the third base dugout of the Golden Eagles.

With the score tied at one a piece in the ninth, the Fighting Falcons cranked their second long ball of the day into right center field, putting them up 2-1. Caleb Rush would come on in relief and slammed the door on the top of the ninth, striking out one batter and forcing a ground ball to third base that ended the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth Charleston was chasing one run and were relieved to see starting pitcher Logan Smith exit the game after tossing eight innings of four hit ball. Tyler Dellerman stepped up to the dish in the bottom of the ninth and worked a big time lead off walk. It was followed up by an 0-2 single by Kyle West to left field. With the game in the balance pinch runner Brayden McCallister stepped in for Dellerman at second base as the Golden Eagles desperately needed just one run to stay alive.

Braxton Boddorf followed up the single with a walk to load the bases before freshman Giano Zuccaro came up huge with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 2. After a strikeout by Clay Hale, Peter Costigan stepped up to the plate and wore one off the back to give the Golden Eagles a walk off winner in game one.

After the excitement in game one Charleston looked to follow up with a win in game two. Starting pitcher Owen MacNeil was dominant on the bump for Charleston in game two and gave the Charleston his best start of his 2022 campaign.

The sophomore Ontario native shoved tossing 6.1 innings allowing just 4 hits, one earned run while striking out four and walking just two. The sole run came in the third inning when Tyler Haskins plated Ryan Goff on an RBI single.

From there it would be all Charleston on offense. Hedgesville native Kyle West got the party started in the fourth, planting a moonshot into the right center field gap and tying the game up at one in the fourth.

The fifth inning saw Charleston plate six more runs with the first one coming again off the bat of Kyle West. West ended his afternoon going 3-4 with a triple in the first, a home run in the fourth and an RBI double that plated the go ahead run in the fifth.

Jordan Bailey would score the first run in the fifth off the West double. Braxton Boddorf brought home West with a back-side liner into the left center field gap. With the based juiced Clay Hale found redemption from his strikeout with based hucked in game on as he rip a seed into the gap in right center. He plated Giano Zuccaro, Jack Reisenweber and Braxton Boddorf with the hit and put Charleston up 6-1. Jordan Bailey found a bit of luck for the first time on the afternoon as he hit a jamshot double with two outs into left field that scored Hale from second. At the end of five Charleston led by a score of 7-1

Charleston would add another run in the sixth inning as Giano Zuccaro pieced up a no doubt tater over the right field fence to cap the scoring for the Golden Eagles.

Campbell Spradling would come in and slam the door on the Fighting Falcons in the seventh as he pitched two thirds of an inning and collected one strikeout.

Giano Zuccaro ended his day with three hits tallying one RBI from his solo shot in the sixth while scoring two runs. Clay Hale also added two hits including the big bases clearing double in the fifth. Kyle West finished with three RBI on the afternoon to go along with his three extra base hits.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action next weekend as they take on Wheeling University and West Liberty in their final MEC North Division matchups of the season.
