How it Happened
Game One
Charleston (19-14) took a 1-0 first inning lead but did not register their first hit until the fifth inning when they exploded for five runs. Dani Bauer shut down the Senator's offense as she only surrendered a soft single in the top of the fourth inning as the Golden Eagles cruised to an 8-0 victory in a six-inning contest shortened by the eight run rule.
UC picked up their first run in the bottom of the first as a result of speed on the basepaths. Offensive sparkplug, Hannah Rose, led off the ball game with a walk and stole second base. She advanced to third on the catcher's errant throw and set the table for Kendal Marshall. Rose tagged and scored on a routine fly to center to give an early 1-0 lead.
Dani Bauer had a no hitter through three until the Senator shortstop, Kailynn Parks, led off the fourth inning by serving a looping single to left field. Bauer would keep her at first as she retired the next three hitters without issue.
The Golden Eagles entered the fifth inning without a hit, but D & E's starter Jenna Evans had some trouble finding the strike zone. With one out, she walked Brionna Bowman on four pitches. After a Bowman stolen base, Carlie Odejewski garnered a free pass to put runners on first and second with one out and the dangerous Hannah Rose stepping up to the plate. Rose poked one past the pitcher for an infield single to load the bases. Marshall picked up her second RBI of the game as she singled up the middle to score Bowman. Allysa Lake followed up with another one-out single to right center to score Odejewski and Rose, opening up a comfortable 4-0 advantage. An RBI single by Gracie Donato chased Evans from the game. A sacrifice fly by Morgan Hoppe would score Lindsay Reavis from third to close out the scoring for the inning.
The UC offense continued to roll in the sixth as Emma Groe smoked a hard shot just inside the third base bag for a lead-off double. Kaitlyn Griffith pinch ran for Groe at second and advance to third on a bunt single by Brionna Bowman. Bowman promptly stole second base. The game would end in walk-off style, as Carlie Odejewski would follow with a liner to left center field to plate both Griffith and Bowman to give UC the 8-0 victory.
Dani Bauer tossed her second shutout of the season, allowing the one hit and two walks. She struck out two.
Game Two
Game two quickly shaped into a pitcher's duel between UC's Morgan Hoppe (8-5) and D & E's Shelby Hile (3-4) who would earn the 1-0 victory for the Senators.
Both pitchers remained in control throughout the contest. The only run of the game would come in the top of the sixth inning as Linzey Allard drove a pitch over the left center field fence. Charleston would threaten in the seventh but could not push across a run.
