How it Happened
Game One
The Golden Eagles (21-15) and Alderson Broaddus traded runs over the first two innings, with UC leading 5-3. Dani Bauer settled down and the UC offense tacked on another five runs in the third and fifth innings to allow the team to cruise to a 10-3 victory.
As has been the case all year long, UC speed generated the first run of the game. Hannah Rose singled, and Kendall Marshall followed with a sacrifice bunt that turned into a single when it sailed over the charging third baseman's head. Rose and Marshall performed a double steal to get two runners in scoring position. Gracie Donato gave UC a 1-0 lead by scoring Rose on a ground out to the left side.
UC starting pitcher, Dani Bauer, struggled to find the strike zone early in the game. She surrendered a lead off walk. A single to center by Hailee Culbertson set up runners on first and second to give AB their first threat with one out. Cortney Fizer stepped up to the plate and poked a single through the left side of the infield. The ball was misplayed by UC's leftfielder to allow AB to knot the game up 1-1.
Charleston would get that run back and more in the second as they loaded the bases with one out after walks to Emma Groe and Morgan Hoppe and a single to left by Kaylee Hotchkiss. Pinch hitter Dani DeBenedictis stepped in and was promptly plunked by the pitch to score a run. Hannah Rose had her opportunity next and took advantage. She hit a frozen rope to right center for a double and plated two more. A sacrifice fly to right field by Marshall closed out the scoring for the inning. UC regained the lead at 5-1.
The Battlers were looking to answer back after a leadoff double by leftfielder Cassie Turk. Some shaky UC defense would allow Turk to score as well as an additional run to cut the lead to 5-3 after two.
UC would add two more runs after AB pitchers struggled to find the strike zone. UC would score their runs without a hit as Battlers pitchers gave up five walks and two more hit batters. Carlie Odejewski and Hannah Rose both were walked with the bases loaded to give UC a 7-1 lead.
The scoring closed out in the fifth inning. Hotchkiss walked to start the rally for UC. Odejewski followed with a liner to left field, and the bases were loaded after another walk to Rose. Kendall Marshall would drive a base clearing double to left field to score three giving her four RBIs on the day.
Dani Bauer (11-10) picked up the complete game victory. She did not allow an earned run and struck out five.
Game Two
UC scored ten runs in the first inning, putting this game out of reach quickly. AB would march out six different pitchers in the game, but Charleston continued to greet them rudely. Morgan Hoppe was effective in the circle, which resulted in a five-inning game that was shortened by the 8-run rule.
The ten run first inning was highlighted by a couple of triples and two home runs. Hannah Rose set the tone when she led the game off with a triple. Allyssa Lake had a triple, a homer, and four RBIs in the inning. Lindsay Reavis drove in two of her own after she laced a bases loaded double to right center field to score two. UC scored 10 runs on 6 hits, two walks and two hit batters.
The second inning was highlighted by Emma Groe's first homer of the season. She smacked a bomb over the centerfield fence. Third inning scoring was produced by a single from Lake and a double to right center by Alli Rubal. Both advanced on a wild pitch to open up the score to 11-0.
Morgan Hoppe did not face much resistance through the first two innings, but a leadoff single by AB's centerfielder Bri Sersevic set the table for Cassie Christian. Christian handled a Hoppe offering by depositing over the left field fence to produce the Battlers' runs for the game. After three, the score was 11-2.
Three more runs in the fourth pushed the score to 15-2. The inning was highlighted by Allyssa Lake's fourth hit of the game. She singled giving her five RBIs for the game. Alli Rubal drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. AB would pick up a run in the fifth producing the final score of 15-3.
Morgan Hoppe (9-5) picked up the victory as she allowed two runs and struck out four over three innings. Mahea Haegele closed out the final two innings surrendering one run and striking out one.
Hannah Rose had another huge day as she was not retired in either game of the double header. The NCAA D2 Player of the Year finalist was 5-5 with four runs, three RBIs, three walks and two more stolen bases, giving her 29 on the season.
