Webb Tosses No Hitter as Golden Eagles Sweep Senators

CHARLESTON, W.Va - The Golden Eagles routed the visiting Davis and Elkins College Senators on Thursday and Friday at the Welch Athletic Complex. Pitching would prove to be dominant in the series as UC would give up just two runs in 28 innings of work. Colt Webb highlighted the weekend with his lights out performance in game one on Saturday. He tossed the first no hitter in UC history since 2000 and the ninth in the history of the University. Solid starts by Ethan Soderna, Drew Beckner, and Owen MacNeil allowed the Golden Eagles to outscore their opponent 45-2 on the weekend.

Game 1

Charleston starting pitcher Ethan Soderna earned his seventh win of the season, as he pitched a complete game in the first of the four-game series against Davis & Elkins. In another dominant performance, Soderna tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and one walk. UC posted a shutout for the third time this season.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, the bottom of the third frame saw four runs on three hits as Drew Klaserner led off the inning with a double to left field. Pete Costigan switched places with him with a double of his own, bringing the score to 1-0. After a walk and a passed ball from the Davis and Elkins starter, Tyler Dellerman hit a two-run homer over the netting in left field, bringing home Jordan Bailey.

Soderna continued to dominate on the hill as Charleston's offense went silent for a few innings. Offense was sparked once again in the bottom of the fifth when the Golden Eagles added three more runs on three hits . Hits were seen from Jack Reisenweber, Kyle West, and Braxton Boddorf.

Davis & Elkins had the potential for a big sixth inning with two singles from Neal and DeGrood, however, were unable to produce as both hitters were left on base.

Brayden McCallister launched his first collegiate homerun in the sixth inning and brought the final score to an 8-0 win over the Senators.

Game 2 UC 21 D&E 1

UC completed Friday's doubleheader sweep besting D&E 21-1 in the second game of the day. Charleston's Drew Beckner started on the mound, pitching five solid innings with only one hit, one earned run, and six strikeouts.

The bats came alive for the Golden Eagles in game two of the series. Taking an early lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Dellerman, the Senators responded with an RBI double from Higgins to tie the ballgame in the second inning. Charleston would not supply a run in the third inning, but would score six in the third inning, five in the fourth and fifth, then four more in the sixth inning to finish their offensive onslaught.

Some key performances for the Golden Eagles were Jordan Bailey going 2-3 with a double, along with an RBI, and a run scored of his own. Tyler Dellerman would go 3-3 at the plate, while supplying the Golden Eagles offense with six RBI's and a run of his own, as well. Will Glazebrook and Clay Hale would help supply the runs with three RBI's a piece. Glazebrook went 3-5 with a triple and Hale went 2-4 with a double. Andre Martinez would round out the offense in game two, scoring four runs for the Golden Eagles and tallying two RBI's as well.

Game 3 UC 10 D&E 0

In game one of Saturday's twin bill, Colt Webb would be the ninth pitcher in Charleston baseball history to throw a no-hitter. Backed up by stellar defense from the Golden Eagles, Webb would walk two, hit one, and strikeout seven Senators in seven innings of work.

The offense would continue its ferocious attack led by the bat of Kyle West who would have two home runs and three RBI's. Joining West on the offensive side were several multi-hit performances from Jordan Bailey, Tyler Dellerman, and Jack Reisenweber. Dellerman and Reisenweber would each supply a double along with the bat of Clay Hale. The Golden Eagles would drop ten runs in game three to beat Davis & Elkins 10-0.

Game 4 UC 6 D&E 1

Owen MacNeil turned in another impressive performance, going five innings with seven strikeouts. MacNeil only gave up three hits and one walk, earning his third win of the year.

Braxton Boddorf and Kyle West shined at the plate, both going 3-4 on the final contest of the series. Boddorf added three RBI's and West had two runs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 6-1 victory over Davis & Elkins.

The first inning saw action as the Golden Eagles started the contest with two runs and two hits. The game stayed quiet for the next three innings. A sacrifice fly from Jordan Bailey, an RBI double from Tyler Dellerman, and an RBI single from Boddorf brought the score to 5-0. Davis & Elkins brought a run in the sixth inning after an RBI single from Hitch.

The final score was 6-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles. UC travels to Glenville State for a doubleheader series on April 23 and 24th.
