MacNeil Dominant Once Again as Offense Continues to Impress in MEC Baseball Tournament with 15-1 Win Over Concord

BECKLEY, W.Va- The Golden Eagle Baseball Team continued their dominance in the Mountain East Conference Tournament by crushing Concord 15-1. They exploded for 17 hits as their offensive prowess continues to shine through. Pitching has continued to perform at a high level as well as Owen MacNeil shut down the best hitting team in the MEC in the winner's bracket final.

How it Happened

MacNeil, the reigning Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week had another outstanding performance on the bump. The redshirt sophomore went 7.0 innings while striking out 7, allowing just 5 hits, and 1 earned run. His performance puts Charleston in a great position for the Championship game on Sunday. So far this tournament UC has used just four pitchers in their three wins with all starters tossing at least 7.0 innings.

Offense provided the necessary run support to MacNeil from the jump. They plated five runs in the very first inning and never looked back as every starter in the lineup tallied a hit in the game. In the 1st inning Jordan Bailey led off with a double and was later brought home by Brayden McCallister who singled with the bases loaded. Drew Klaserner, who tallied three RBI on the day walked with the bases loaded to bring home the second run. Pete Costigan scored a run on a sac fly before Giano Zuccaro picked up his first 2 of his 6 RBI on the day with a backside single that scored Klaserner and McCallister.

Zuccaro picked up two more RBI with a double into the right center in the third. Concord would score their only run of the game on a home run by Anthony Stehlin in the bottom of that inning.

Charleston would score 7 runs in the top of the 4th inning on 6 hits. Klaserner picked up his only hit of the afternoon on an RBI single up the middle. Costigan smacked a single to left field that scored McCallister and made the score 10-1. Costigan was hitting just .239 on April 11, but since that time the redshirt senior has picked up 21 hits and is batting .456 since that date. Charleston. Andre Martinez had his first hit of the day and picked up an RBI, bringing the score to 12-1. The scoring was capped with a 2-RBI double into the left centerfield gap.

They would add one more in the top of the fifth, again off the bat of Zuccaro. This time he slapped a single to left field that scored McCallister from third. It would be the team game high fourth run for McCallister as the sophomore right fielder reached base four times on the afternoon.

Klaserner has been the toughest hitter to face in the Golden Eagle lineup so far in the tournament. Through three games he has been on base 10 times in 13 plate appearances with 5 hits that included two doubles, two sacrifice flies, seven runs scored and six RBI.

Five different hitters had multiple hits in the game: Dellerman (2), Boddorf (2), Chartier (2), McCallister (3), and Zuccaro (4).

Up next, The Golden Eagles will face off against the winner of Glenville and Concord tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament Championship game. With a fresh bullpen and a red-hot offense, Charleston is poised to take their third MEC Championship in the last four years.
